Do you experience severe neck pain with referral pain, numbness, tingling and weakness of the shoulder and arm? You could have cervical radiculopathy.
Cervical radiculopathy is commonly known as ‘pinched nerve’ in the neck. Our neck (cervical spine) is comprise of 7 vertebral bodies with spinal nerve roots traversing through the intervertebral foramens. (See illustration)

Cervical radiculopathy occurs when the nerve root is impinged or irritated by compressive materials such as a herniated disc/ slipped disc or arthritic bone spur. The most common level of impingement occurs at the lower neck region.

People with cervical radiculopathy typically experiences:
  • High intensity neck pain with limited neck movements.
  • Neck pain that is made worse by coughing sneezing or looking upwards.
  • Muscle weakness in the arm, fingers or shoulder.
  • Numbness, tingling, “pins and needles” or electric shock like sensation radiating into the upper limb.
  • Referral pain such as shoulder pain, mid back pain, arm pain.

Chiropractic treatments can help to manage cervical radiculopathy in a drug-free and effective manner. The initial phase of treatment would focus on pain relief and improving movements at the injured segments by restoring proper biomechanical function of the surrounding joints and musculature. Treatments would usually involve joint manipulation/mobilisation soft tissue therapy (dry needling/acupuncture) and home stretches. Once the symptoms subside, the patient would then be gradually exposed to an exercise program aimed at strengthening the region and restoring proper function and posture.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms above, please do not hesitate to come in for an examination at Spearwood Chiropractic. Call us on 0481342837 to make an appointment.
