Stretching
•Release tight tissues. Ligaments and muscles may have stay contracted for too long, causing restriction in the painful area.
•Improve mobility. Tight and restricted area suffers from lack of movements. Over time, this causes a vicious cycle which further contracts the surrounding soft tissues and cause more pain.
Strengthening
•To provide a stable base to the injured area to prevent future recurrence.
•To build up weak muscles in order to minimize structural or movement compensations.
A general rule of thumb for strengthening vs stretching is that stretching is typically the best during the acute painful phase. Stretching can provide temporary pain relief to relieve pressure from the injury.
Strengthening is more useful to help with improving functions of the body to help with reducing the chances of recurrence.
