Hamstring strains are one of the most common injuries amongst athletes, with a notoriously high recurrence rate due to the complexity of the muscle functions. The primary causes leading to hamstring tears are:
- Loss of flexibility at the hip.
- Poor conditioning of the hamstring muscles.
- Muscle imbalance between the quadriceps and hamstring group.
Hamstring strains are typically categorized into 3 grades:
Grade 1: Tearing of a few muscle fibers, typically at the tendon region.
Grade 2: Severe muscle tear without complete disruption of the muscular structures.
Grade 3: Complete tear of musculature.
A person with a hamstring tear may experience the followings, depending on severity:
• Tenderness and swelling at the back of the thigh.
• Bruising at the region of the hamstring muscles.
• Weakness and limited mobility during ambulation.
Chiropractic treatments have been well documented to manage hamstring tear in a drug-free and effective manner. The initial phase of treatment would focus on restoring proper biomechanical function of the surrounding joints and musculatures. Treatments would usually involve joint manipulation/mobilisation, trigger point therapy, home stretches and kinesiotaping. Due to the extremely high recurrence rate of re-injury, the patients would then be gradually exposed to an exercise program aimed at strengthening the region involved.
If you are experiencing any of the symptoms above, please do not hesitate to come in for an examination at Spearwood Chiropractic. Call us on 0481342837 to make an appointment.
