Our neck (cervical spine) is an intricate segment consisting of 7 vertebraes, which provide attachment sites for a variety of muscles as well as housing our nervous system. One of the main functions of our cervical spine is to provide upright posture and supporting the weight of our skull.
With the rise in sedentary lifestyle and technology device usage, we tend to find ourselves fixated in a forward head posture (see illustration), which places a significant amount of pressure on our cervical spinal structure, leading to wear and tear and immobility.
•Headache •Shoulder pain •Radiation to the midback or the arm.
•Restricted motion in the neck. •Muscular tenderness
Chiropractic treatments have been well documented to manage neck pain in a drug-free and effective manner. The initial phase of treatment would focus on pain management by restoring proper function and reducing inflammation at the involved joint. Treatments would usually involve joint manipulation/mobilisation, trigger point therapy, home stretches and kinesiotaping. Once the inflammation subsides, the patient would then be gradually exposed to an exercise program aimed at strengthening the region and restoring the posture.
