AC injuries are usually due to fall, direct blow or blunt trauma. The injuries can be classified into 3 different grades depending on the severity of the ligament tear and dislocation of the clavicle.
- Pain, swelling and tenderness at the AC joint. The AC joint may protrude.
- Pain with shoulder movements, especially side and front liftings.
- Pain with side lying, affecting sleep.
Grade 1 and Grade 2 AC injuries have a high success rate with conservative chiropractic management and rehabilitation. The goal of the treatment is to maintain and regain mobility in the shoulder, reduce pain and inflammation and strengthening the compromised structures. Grade 3 injuries usually requires surgical repair to address the ruptured ligaments and bony displacement.
It is important that AC injuries be managed appropriately as improper management can result in early onset arthritis of the shoulder joint, which will significantly hamper the functions of the shoulder.
