- Area of tenderness, tightness.
- Inflammation, warmth and redness.
- Muscle and joints rigidity.
A chiropractor’s job is to identify and correct the dysfunctions of the underlying joints and muscles with chiropractic adjustment. To perform a chiropractic adjustment, a trained chiropractor will apply with quick, precise thrusting force either by hand or by an adjusting instrument.
Chiropractic adjustments are theorised to function in the following ways:
The Adhesion Model
This model proposes that an injured, and therefore immobile joint causes adhesions or scar tissues to accumulate. A severe and common example is adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder). This causes the joint to be ‘sticky’ thus leading to inflammation and pain in the surrounding area.
Our nervous system delivers informations between our brain and musculoskeletal system. In order to execute a movement, our brain, joints and muscles rely on constant feedbacks from each other.
When a dysfunction occurs in the spinal joint, incorrect informations interfere with the feedback loop between the brain and body. This can result in faulty movement pattern, which leads to injuries.
By delivering an adjustment, chiropractor restores the movements into the joint, which ‘resets’ the nervous circuit to re-establish the connections between the brain and the dysfunctioning joints. This will restore the correct functionings of the nervous system and motor control pattern.
