This is a very common question we often encounter from our patients. Let’s weigh up the benefit and harm of using a posture brace.
Posture brace is a great tool to assist with retraining optimal posture. It provides feedback to our nervous system and muscles to help uphold the correct alignment and posture.
However, you can also have too much of a good thing. Long term usage of back brace can take over the muscles, causing muscular atrophy and weakening of our muscles. This may cause our posture to deteriorate further with long-term usage.
So how should postural back brace be used?
- Gradual weaning of back brace. Use back brace for the short term to prevent muscular weakening.
- Get in to see us. A chiropractor can assess, advice and correct your alignment.
Back brace is a helpful adjunct in keeping our body to maintain the correct alignment. However, it is not the silver bullet to correct our posture for the long term. Ultimately, we need to rely on proper functionings of our musculoskeletal system to help with restoring posture!
