The meniscus is a thick cartilage that cushions and support stability in the knee. It helps protect our knee from wear and tear.
Meniscus injuries can occur through:
1. Sport Injuries
Sudden, traumatic change of direction in the knee can cause the meniscus to tear. This could also occur at the same time as an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medical collateral ligament (MCL) injury.
2. Degeneration
Age related degeneration and wear and tear can cause the meniscus to wear out.
•Sudden and severe knee pain with swelling. This can be made worse with weightbearing.
•Joint locking and clicking. Patient might struggle to straighten their knees.
• Knee could feel like giving way.
Meniscus injuries typically respond well to conservative treatments. Treatment could consist of joint mobilization, manipulation, rehabilitation and soft tissue therapy. A larger and severe type of tear might require surgical repair.
Common conditions that our chiropractors treat are low back pain, neck pain, headache, sporting injuries, postural issues, nerve entrapment, sciatica, jaw pain, shoulder pain, wrist pain, elbow pain, hip pain, knee pain, ankle pain and foot pain.
