Our piriformis muscle is a fan shaped muscle that runs diagonally from our sacrum to the top of our thighbone. Running in close proximity to our piriformis muscle is our sciatic nerve (See illustration). Piriformis syndrome can be attributed to several causes such as:
•Blunt trauma to the buttock.
•Prolonged sitting.
• Weak gluteal muscles.
• Immobility of the underlying joint.
All of which leads to irritation and spasm of the muscle, which may entraps on the underlying sciatic nerve.
Patients with piriformis syndrome may experience:
•Intense pain in the buttock.
•Possible sharp, shooting radiation down to the leg.
•Relief when walking with toe pointing outward.
Chiropractors are well trained to manage piriformis syndrome in a drug-free and effective manner. Treatments would usually involve joint manipulation/mobilisation, trigger point therapy, kinesiotaping and exercises to reduce inflammation, promote healing and restore proper functioning of the underlying joints.
If you are experiencing any of the symptoms associated with piriformis syndrome, please do not hesitate to come in for an examination at Spearwood Chiropractic. Call us on 0481342837 to make an appointment.
