Several factors that commonly contribute to tennis elbow are:
- Over usage of the forearm muscles. This could be due to occupational or recreational activities that involves prolonged usage of the forearm muscles thus increasing wear and tear.
- Incorrect techniques or new equipment. Faulty movement pattern or technique in a recently adopted activities or equipments can cause damage of the tendon.
- Trauma. Direct blow or sudden forceful pull to the elbow or forearm can cause the muscles to be injured and inflamed.
Patients with tennis elbow may experience:
- Pain/ burning sensation at the outer part of their elbow.
- Pain with wrist movement.
- Weakened grip strength.
- Radiation into the wrist and shoulder.
Chiropractic treatments have been well documented to manage tennis elbow in a drug-free and effective manner. The initial phase of treatment would focus on reducing inflammation and restoring proper biomechanical function of the surrounding joints and musculatures. Treatments would usually involve joint manipulation/mobilisation, soft tissue therapy (dry needling, trigger point therapy, graston technique), bracing, home stretches and kinesiotaping. The patients would then be gradually exposed to an exercise program aimed at strengthening the region.
